Bacon's Rebellion The governor of Virginia, and his associates in the commercial ventures in the colony, supplemented their earnings from tobacco growing by carrying on a trade with the Indians in the western parts of the colony. They provided manufactured goods in return for furs and deerskin. Settlers in the same area, known as the Piedmont, saw the Indians as obstacles and enemies. As settlers moved west, they constantly asked for protection from the Indians. Some of the Indian tribes, like the Algonkian and Susquehannocks also complained to the governor about "white marauders." Governor Berkeley and his associates did not want to go to war with the Indians as it would upset their trading relations. It turned out that the Oconeechee had not even been involved in the attacks on the whites. But Bacon and his force crushed the tribe and then turned his "army" on the colonial capital of Jamestown. The governor had Bacon arrested but he was soon released when his supporters threatened force against the capital. Bacon forced the governor to flee across the Chesapeake to the eastern shores of Virginia, and for a time Bacon and his rebels governed Virginia. It will never be known how the English government would have solved the problem because Bacon fell ill and died in October, 1676, at the age of 29. With their leader gone, the rebels scattered into the forests. The Governor returned to Jamestown and had several dozen of the rebels rounded up and hanged. The King of England, Charles II, considered Berkeley's reaction too harsh and ordered him recalled to England. He died within a few months of his return.
